| Thomas Merton was the most popular proponent of the Christian contemplative tradition in the twentieth century. Now, for the first time, some of his most lyrical and prayerful writings have been arranged into A Book of Hours, a rich resource for daily prayer and contemplation that imitates the increasingly popular ancient monastic practice of "praying the hours". Editor Kathleen Deignan mined Merton's voluminous writings, arranging prayers for Dawn, Day, Dusk, and Dark for each of the days of the week. A Book of Hours allows for a slice of monastic contemplation in the midst of hectic modern life, with psalms, prayers, readings, and reflections. Kathleen Deignan's Event Schedule Listen to Stanley Hadsell, of Market Block Books speaking on the Northeast Public Radio book show with a review of A Book of Hours. One of the modern writers of the monastic tradition, of course, is Thomas Merton, and, though I might be one who thinks that Merton has been sized up, quoted, used and reused in every imaginable way, I was pleasantly surprised recently when I came across Thomas Merton: A Book of Hours, compiled by Kathleen Deignan. It is a marvelous, inspiring, comforting, jolting, consoling little volume that organizes Merton's writing into prayers for dawn, midday, dusk and night of each day.
Our sales rep (John Vogt) gave me a copy of A Book of Hours and I can't begin to tell you how amazing this little book is. I'm the manager and religion book buyer for Market Block Books and Book House of Stuyvesant
Plaza AND a lifelong reader of Thomas Merton. I'm always eager to read books about and by Merton but this little prayer book has taken me completely by surprise.

Prof Deignan: I could not find your email fast enough to tell you how much I LOVE "The Book of Hours" Merton style. It just arrived, in fact the Amazon.com box is still in my recycle bin :))
As one who is obviously on a spiritual journey of his own, this little book will form the structure of my day, my own lectio divina. A sudden calmness settled over me as I started to read James Finley's words in the Foreword. I fell into Thomas Merton years ago during a NPR radio show featuring "A Seven Story Mountain". At that time I was driven to find out who this man was, and when I did, my life was changed. I have retreated at Gethsemani, the Abbey of the Genesee and soon will be heading off to St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, MA.
If your desire was to reach at least one reader with this book you have done so and I thank you for that. It will become part of my Dawn, Day, Dusk and Dark.
God bless you,
