Can I duplicate materials from Ave Maria Press books for educational purposes or liturgical use?
We receive numerous requests from churches, schools, religious communities, small groups, and individuals to duplicate materials from books for educational purposes as well as for liturgical use. Often these requests are made because purchasing the entire book is not practical and/or appropriate. If the material is to be included in another book to be published and sold, please see our Domestic and Foreign Rights section below. If you are using a poem or prayer text, or if the amount of text is greater than 250 words, please contact us for permission. If you are duplicating material for private and limited circulation, and not for sale, and if the amount of prose text you wish to use is less than 250 words, you may do so without written permission. The following acknowledgment should appear somewhere on the reproduced material. The information you need is found on the copyright page of the book. Excerpted from (book title) by (author). Copyright (date) by Ave Maria Press, P.O. Box 428, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Used with permission of the publisher. We wish to accommodate duplication requests and are using the minimal fee established by the Copyright Clearance Center. We believe that religious book publishing is a ministry, but we must also face the realities of providing a fair royalty to the authors who have created these materials, as well as recovering our sizeable investment and meeting the ongoing costs of doing business. How can I submit my manuscript to Ave Maria Press?
Thank you for your interest in Ave Maria Press. We are a Catholic book publisher serving the spiritual and educational needs of individuals, groups, and the church as a whole. While many of our books address a wide ecumenical readership, our primary interest is in books for Catholics and Catholic institutions.
There are a number of areas in which we do not accept unsolicited manuscripts: fiction (for adults, teens, or children), poetry, biography, autobiography, and accounts of personal conversion or private revelation. If your manuscript falls in one of these categories, we advise you to seek a publisher active in your area of interest.
While we receive hundreds of manuscripts annually, very few are selected for publication. If you wish to submit a proposal that you think is appropriate to our interest, please do so. We ask that you send the following:
1) A query letter that explains what your book is about, your intended audience, what sets it apart from other books currently available on the subject, how long the book is, and what your qualifications are for writing the book. Please also let us know if you are submitting your manuscript simultaneously to another publisher.
2) A prospectus, table of contents, an introduction, and one or two sample chapters. Or you may elect to send your entire manuscript. All manuscripts should be typed or printed out, double-spaced, on one side of the paper. Please, do not send a copy on computer disk.
Due to ever-changing postal regulations, it is our policy to not return any unsolicited manuscript unless sufficient return postage on a self-addressed envelope is included. Please keep a copy for yourself.
Please send your submission to:
Acquisitions Editor Ave Maria Press P.O. Box 428 Notre Dame, Indiana 46556
We will try to respond to you within six to eight weeks, though sometimes it takes longer. Understand that manuscripts require as long as several months, particularly if we are heavily backlogged or if we ask for an outside reader's opinion. There is no fee for evaluating your manuscript. However, time constraints do not permit us to offer detailed evaluations.
We will not accept or respond to queries, proposals, or manuscripts sent by e-mail or fax. We also ask that authors refrain from telephone inquiries of any kind.
