One the most prolific and influential Catholic journalists of the twentieth century, Gary MacEoin (1909–2003) was the author of twenty-five books, including The People’s Church: Bishop Samuel Ruiz of Mexico and Why He Matters, as well as the editor of The Papacy and the People of God. During his seventy-year career, MacEoin was an accomplished editor, speechwriter, public relations spokesman, union representative, and most importantly, champion for social justice. MacEoin had a long-standing relationship with the National Catholic Reporter dating from the paper’s beginnings in the 1960s.
