Catherine de Hueck Doherty (1896–1985) was born in Russia and emigrated to Canada in 1921. Doherty established Friendship House in Harlem, New York, as well as Madonna House, a Catholic community of men, women, and priests in Combermere, Ontario. Doherty’s cause for canonization as a saint was opened by Pope John Paul II in 2000, and she has been given the official title Servant of God.
