Description

The essential collection of poetic and contemplative blessings and prayers from Christine Valters Paintner, the beloved online abbess of the Abbey of the Arts.

A Book of Everyday Blessings: 100 Prayers for Dancing Monks, Artists, and Pilgrims is a treasury of creative blessings and prayers that will help you bring reverence to every aspect of life, transforming even the mundane parts of your day into an encounter with holiness. As Paintner writes, “Blessings offer hope and encouragement, steep us in gratitude, and nurture our courage. They bring us present to the grace of each moment. They remind us of the love and beauty of the Holy One in our lives and assist us in taking nothing for granted. They act as maps to navigate our human experience, orienting us back to gratefulness and praise. They invite us to breathe more deeply, enlarge our vision, and give honor to our experiences. Blessings help us touch eternity here and now.”

 With her lyrical style and contemplative wisdom, Paintner gives voice to the longings, fears, gratitude, and wonder that live in every human heart. This collection includes

  • blessings for quiet moments—for silence and solitude, the gift of rest, being present to each moment, peace and discernment;
  • blessings for daily living—for a spark of joy on a bad day, grace in the ordinary, release into sleep, creative joy, calm in chaos, loving more deeply, when the calendar is full;
  • blessings for health, healing, and wholeness—for health in times of illness, starting a new medication, healing a divided family, support in depression, rest in burnout;
  • blessings for pilgrimage—for saying yes to the journey, stepping into the unknown, traveling lightly, coming home;
  • blessings for our connection to the holy wild—for kinship with creation, learning from the wisdom of nature, savoring the wild sacrament of creation, a song of praise, a lament for creation;
  • blessings for the seasons—for Advent, embracing holy darkness, following Mary as God-Bearer, a Lenten journey, Holy Week, celebrating a birthday, the anniversary of a death;
  • threshold blessings—for bountiful hospitality, comfort when facing the unknown, patience in waiting, before going on retreat, courage to befriend death.

A gifted teacher, Paintner concludes this book of blessings with an invitation to embrace three practices that can deepen your experience of blessings and empower you to create your own—soaking in the presence of the divine, being a blessing in the world, and writing your own blessings.

This is a book that will both serve as a resource when you are in need of beautiful blessings and shape your interior life to become more aware of God’s presence abiding within you day by day. “Blessing is an act of solidarity—it is a way to say to someone, I am praying for you, I am celebrating with you, I am grieving with you,” Paintner writes, “and I know the Holy One is praying, celebrating, and grieving with us.”

    Thoughtful, Beautiful, Relatable Blessings

    This is a beautiful book from cover, to each page, to an amazing conclusion with three practices empowering us to be a blessing to others and write our own blessings. These are "everyday blessings"; none are ordinary. Each expression calls for reflection and taking time to savor. I was especially taken with "For my Inner Child," and "For Using Technology Well." Divided into timely and timeless sections, there are blessings for seasons and thresholds, health, and connecting to the holy wild. I want to share these with everyone, and turn to them often.

    A treasure chest filled with hope, inspiration, comfort, challenge and solidarity

    This book is a treasure chest filled with hope, inspiration, comfort, challenge and solidarity. As I made the journey through these blessings I was struck by their range and depth and colour, Christine paints pictures that shimmer into life through her words. There are blessings for daily life and all it’s shades, for quiet moments, for a spark of joy in a bad day, for deeper gratitude, for calm in the chaos, praise and lament, the death of an animal, for the Earth our sanctuary, for a walk through the seasons and, in all these and more, I felt wrapped in the arms of a Love that would not let me go and, refreshed and replenished, urged to bless others with that Love.

    The Gift of Timeless Blessings

    The remarkable capacity of Christine Valters Paintner to awaken us to the sacred presence and provision always available to us within daily living makes this book’s one hundred blessings a ‘must-read’ resource. The title of each blessing makes it easy to select the particular one, or more, able to help us navigate specific circumstances. Whether we need refreshment, encouragement, guidance, or wise counsel for moments mundane or momentous, each blessing/ prayer, organized around seven themes, has layered offerings able to align us with what we need, when we need it.

    The book’s penultimate blessing, To Keep Hope Alive, one of my favourites, contains the wise reminder “that hope is not a thing/ but an action.” This prompt to enact and embody hope in specific ways makes this blessing’s sustenance one to repeatedly return to. Its practical wisdom serves as but one example of what makes this whole collection of blessings a long-lasting gift, worthy of consistent revisiting.

    When we awaken to the many little graces that gift our days, our capacity for gratitude expands. By acknowledging each day’s unexpected grace-gifts, we become more alert witnesses to the sacredness that permeates the everyday life of ourselves, and others.

    Paintner offers us three practices to round out this book. The second one encourages us to Practice Being A Blessing To The World. The details of this and the other two practices offer us ways for passing on the blessings we’ve received. This is a fitting…
