Developing an Author Platform

How can I use my website to reach more readers?

Your #1 goal should be to use your website to build an email list of potential readers. Sign up for a service such as MailChimp, which is free for up to 2,000 subscribers. Add a signup form in the sidebar of your website, at the bottom of blog posts, and on your About page. To get the best results, offer a free giveaway as an incentive to sign up for your email list (i.e. free eBook, a sample chapter, a resource guide). Use your list to regularly communicate with your readers.

At the very least, use your website to introduce people to you, your book(s), and other ways they can engage with you (email, social media, presentations, etc.).

Should I be on social media?

While building an email list should be your first priority, social media can be a great way to find, connect, and develop a relationship of trust with potential readers and fellow authors. If you are overwhelmed by the thought of social media, choose one platform at a time and learn how to use it.

The most successful authors use social media to share their blog posts, comment on other people's articles, update connections on their work, and to offer quotes or words of encouragement that inspire them. Make sure you insert your own personality in what you post or people won't feel connected to you.

When should I tell my audience about my book?

It's OK to talk about your book project with your audience while you are working on the book. You want to connect with an audience and the people who influence them to show you are an authority on your book's topic. Be careful not to share book titles or cover designs before they are finalized. You can encourage preorders, but reserve your biggest promotion ideas until the publication of your book.
