Ave Maria Press Releases First Framework-Approved Textbook in Apple iBookstore

Ave Maria Press is once again leading the way in Catholic high school religion textbooks! We are pleased to announce that Jesus Christ: God’s Revelation to the World is now available to purchase on the iPad in the iBooks app, becoming the first USCCB Framework-approved textbook available on this platform. This textbook is the most interactive Catholic religion textbook on the market, complete with fun and informative widgets, hyperlinks, and all of the iBook reader features. Our goal is to make the first-semester freshman and sophomore titles available this fall. Framework Course I (Jesus Christ: God’s Revelation to the World) will be quickly followed by Course III (Jesus Christ: Source of Our Salvation). Second-semester freshman and sophomore textbooks, Course II (Jesus Christ: His Mission and Ministry) and Course IV (The Church: Our Story), will be available in January 2013. The final two core framework textbooks, Course V (Meeting Jesus in the Sacraments) and Course VI (Your Life in Christ), are scheduled for release in August 2013. Holy Cross Authors Win Catholic Press Awards

Two Ave Maria Press authors, also priests of the Congregation of Holy Cross, won first-place Catholic Press Association awards at the 2012 Catholic Media Conference in Indianapolis on June 22. Rev. Ronald Raab, C.S.C., author of The Unsheltered Heart and associate pastor of Saint Andre Bessette Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon, won in the category of best regular column, spiritual life, for three columns in Celebrate! magazine: “Getting Our Feet Wet” (Spring 2011), “Message in a Bottle” (Summer 2011), and “Off The Wall” (Fall 2011). According to the judges, “The author offers insight and inspiration in each column, driving the reader to think about each column well after reading.” Raab previously won first place in the column category in the 2012 Canadian Church Press Award for the same series of columns. Rev. Daniel G. Groody, C.S.C. won first prize for best coverage of immigration for his America article “A Theology of Migration.” Groody is associate professor of theology and director of the Center for Latino Spirituality and Culture at the University of Notre Dame’s Institute for Latino Studies. Groody and Cardinal Roger Mahony are coauthoring a forthcoming mini-unit on immigration for high school students. The judges noted that his story was “One man’s personal journey, experiences, and reflections. Never loses the big picture. Everyone should approach immigration thus.” Groody recently received the Touchstone Award from the National Federation of Priests’ Councils.

Congregation of Holy Cross Elects New Provincial Superior

Rev. Thomas J. O’Hara, C.S.C., was elected as the new Provincial Superior of the Congregation of Holy Cross, United States Province of Priests and Brothers by the Provincial Chapter in Portland, Ore., on Friday, June 15 (Feast Day of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus). Fr. O’Hara is the first elected Provincial of the newly merged United States Province. The Eastern Province merged into the Indiana Province forming the United States Province of Priests and Brothers, which became effective on July 1, 2011. As Provincial Superior, Fr. O’Hara will oversee the work and welfare of more than 500 priests, brothers and seminarians in the U.S. Province. He succeeds Rev. David T. Tyson, who served as Provincial Superior for 9 years. Lisa M. Hendey Honored with ACP Excellence in Publishing Award

Ave Maria Press is delighted to announce that A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms, by author Lisa M. Hendey, has won second place in the inspirational category of the 2012 Excellence in Publishing Awards. These awards are sponsored by the Association of Catholic Publishers and seek to recognize the best in Catholic publishing. The winners were announced earlier today at the 2012 Religious Booksellers Trade Exhibit in St. Charles, IL. "I Wish It Could Be Shown in Every Church in the Nation": John Dear, SJ, Hails Romero Documentary

In a recent review for National Catholic Reporter, John Dear, Jesuit priest, peace activist, and author, praised Monseñor: The Last Journey of Oscar Romero, for its portrayal of "the brave, prophetic Romero, meek and humble but towering in moral strength and truth-telling. It's as if Gandhi were an archbishop." Dear hails the documentary as "perfect for the classroom, church groups, peace and justice meetings; for anyone discouraged by recent church developments and ongoing global wars; and anyone who wonders what prophetic peacemaking might look like." Read the full review here. Monseñor tells the story of the growing repression of the poor in El Salvador in the late 1970s. It is interwoven with the story of Archbishop Óscar Romero, or Monseñor, as he was commonly known, and recounts the short time between his installation as archbishop of San Salvador in 1977 and his assassination on March 24, 1980. The documentary is produced by the Kellogg Institute at the University of Notre Dame and First Run Features and is available from Ave Maria Press. Ave Maria Press has also produced a free, downloadable study guide to be used with the documentary in classroom or parish settings.

Rupp, Hendey Selected as Association of Catholic Publishers Award Finalists

The Association of Catholic Publishers has announced the finalists for the new Excellence in Publishing Awards and two Ave Maria Press books have been selected for this honor. Fragments of Your Ancient Name by Joyce Rupp is a finalist in the Prayer & Spirituality category and A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms by Lisa M. Hendey is a finalist in the Inspirational category. The Excellence in Publishing Awards will be given out at the 2012 Religious Booksellers Trade Exhibit (RBTE) in St. Charles, Illinois.
