Description

Embark on an Advent Journey through Darkness to the Light of Christ

“If we do not embrace the darkness, we cannot welcome the light. This is the heart of Advent: a season of trustful surrender, renewed receptivity, and silent vigil. It is the time when we wait for the coming of the light—not just in the Christ child at Christmas, but in the inner illumination of God’s presence in the soul. God, who is conceived in silence and born in poverty, comes again to fill the soul with light (From the Introduction).”

Illuminate: A Guided Advent Journal for Prayer and Meditation, leads you on a four-week journey through darkness to light. Beginning with the prologue of St. John’s gospel, he reveals the profound hope found in the Word made flesh—the sacred mystery of the Incarnation.

Week 1: Word—“In the beginning was the Word…”
Encounter the eternal Word of God and learn to hear his voice speaking into your daily life.

Week 2: Light—“The light shines in the darkness…”
See how Christ’s light breaks through fear, doubt, and uncertainty, guiding you to embrace truth and hope.

Week 3: Faith—“He came as a witness to testify to the light…”
Like John the Baptist, become a bold and faithful witness to Christ’s love, bringing light to those around you.

Week 4: Life—“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Celebrate the miracle of the Incarnation and experience the fullness of God’s love in your everyday life.

Conclude your Advent journey by welcoming Christmas morning with the powerful words of John’s gospel proclaimed at sunrise Mass.

Through daily meditations, reflection questions, prayer, and beautiful artwork, you’ll move beyond abstract ideas to discover practical, life-changing ways to recognize and share Christ’s light in your everyday life.

Perfect for personal reflection or group study, Illuminate includes free companion videos and a downloadable leader’s guide, found at avemariapress.com.

This Advent, step into the light—and let it lead you to deeper hope, faith, and joy.

Inspiring...challenging...beautiful reflections on John 1! Though ostensibly a book of Advent reflections, I will pray with it all year long.

Thought provoking words inspired my journaling

Fr. John Nepal's "Illuminate" inspired me to journal like never before. Thank you Fr. John for your creating this beautiful Advent treasure. The combination of your personal stories with thought provoking poetry and prayers made for an incredible Advent season.

I've wanted to journal for a long time but have always come up short. "Illuminate" was a catalyst that allowed my thoughts to be expressed on paper that has never happened before. I found myself filling up the blank journal pages with ease. God was speaking to me through my words that were pouring out on the pages. It surprised me as the words flowed. Sometimes I would answer a question and my written words would be related to the next question that I hadn't read yet.

I looked forward to my time with God as your words inspired a beautiful dialogue with our Heavenly Father. I will use your book to reflect on in the coming year, reviewing my journaled words and praying the prayers contained within.

    Thank you Father John!

    Blessings & Peace

    Scott

ps. Thank you for sharing "Illuminate" with the parish of St. John XXIII in Fort Collins.

    Illuminate

    I found that Illuminate...

    - on personal reading of the daily reads, was mildly inspiring with some probing questions

    - the length of each day's read was perfect

    - I did find the prayers at the end of each day read were very good

    - there were some very baffling statements that we were unable to comprehend/agree with:

+ (p33, von Speyr) "Life and light are not absolutely the same. Life means giving and surrender; light is participation."

+ (p41, von Speyr) sin is "not enduring the dark night of love, of wanting to throw light on the darkness of God." Sin is the refusal to endure the mystery.

+ maybe von Speyr and von Balthasar are not a fit for our parishioners here at St. Therese in Lansing, MI?

    - the leader's guide was not helpful

    - this is the 3rd book (Encountering Emmanuel, Prepare Your Heart, Illuminate) we've tried to use in a small group setting. We found the coordinating the week's reading and the discussion session all with the calendar just did not "work." We probably will not try another.

    - the fact that USPS lost our books did not help matters (we still have not received them); I tore apart my book and made copies

I probably should have done much more preparation than I did; part of all the above is on me.

    Must buy!

I love the journal so far- unlike other advent journals which at times feel superficial- I find the reflections a good challenge. For the first time in a long time I find myself thinking of the journal questions and prayers throughout my day, and I find myself that much lighter and a better vehicle for Gods love.

    So much to ponder!

Illuminate is deeply thought provoking. Each reflection is short but after only a little more than a week, I've found many lines and ideas that have left me pondering throughout the day. For example, I have approached adoration and Mass differently calling to mind how I gazed upon my children as babies and considering that God chose to enter humanity in a way that allowed Him to receive that gaze of a mother. Then also yearning for heaven so I can receive the return gaze, as I remember the look in the eyes of my babies looking back at me.

Fr. John has also transformed my perception of darkness considering the receptive love of God. I am motivated to walk through the darkness so as to see the Great Light. I see myself returning to this book again for Advent in future years.
